City OK’s hotel permit extension

A Hampton Inn & Suites is still a possibility for Auburn. In a 4-0 vote Tuesday night the Auburn Planning Commission approved an extension for the project’s design review permit and variance, according to Reg Murray, senior planner for the city of Auburn. Commissioner Fred Vitas was absent. The three-story, 104-room hotel is proposed for Lincoln Way and Russell Road just off Interstate 80 on a vacant piece of property next to the Auburn Woods Condominiums. The extension keeps the permit active until July 28, 2012, Murray said. Murray said although a representative from Reneson Hotels was at the meeting, no statement was made about when the company would want to move forward with the project. In a previous Journal report, Garrett Grialou, president of the company, said Reneson is still optimistic about the project, but the economic slowdown has made them unsure of a construction date. ~Bridget Jones
