Four local baseball players are getting one last chance to shine in their high school uniforms. Gary Root and Michael Moore will represent Colfax while Josh Toft and James Harris will wear their Bear River gear on Sunday in the inaugural River Cats High School Baseball Showcase. The four stars from the foothills were selected from the 42 teams that played at Raley Field during the regular season and the All-City seniors that attended the awards ceremony on May 13 in Sacramento. There were 100 players from all over northern California selected to play in the all-star game. The Bear River and Colfax players will be featured in the early game at 1:05 p.m. They will be coached by former Major League players, incuding Jim Barr, Roland Office, Dion James, Clint Brill, Greg Vaughn and others. Moore was an all-Pioneer Valley League first-team selection. A tremendous defensive catcher and capable hitter, Moore led the Falcons to an 18-11 overall record and a second-place finish in the Pioneer Valley League. Root had an excellent second half of the season, helping the Falcons win four of their last five games before they were eliminated from the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs by Yuba City. Harris was one of the top pitchers in the PVL, earning all-league honors for a second straight year. He wasn?t too shabby at the plate either, batting .262 with 21 RBIs, six doubles and three home runs. Toft was an Honorable Mention pick in the PVL after batting .250 with 15 RBIs and two home runs. Admission and parking for Sunday?s High School Baseball Showcase are free, though fans are encouraged to donate to the Sacramento Food Bank on the day of the games. Fans making donations of $5 or more, or donating canned goods, will receive a ticket voucher good for any Monday-Wednesday River Cats home game during the 2012 season.
