Junior K.C. Capuchino found the back of the net with a volley off of a corner kick and the Colfax High soccer team held off a furious charge from Placer late in the game to pull out a 1-0 win at Le Febvre Stadium Friday night. Hundreds of fans watched the two rivals go back and forth all night under the lights in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both squads. The Falcons pressured the Hillgals’ goal often early in the second half and Capuchino got her foot on Chanel Filteau’s corner kick in a crowded penalty box for the game-winner in the 63rd minute. Placer stormed back. Laura Nash ripped a shot from 35 yards out that glanced off the crossbar. Laurel Odom collected the rebound, but her shot trickled wide of the net. Senior Kelly Viray blasted a promising shot from 40 yards out in the final minutes, but Colfax goalkeeper Amber Cramer went high to make the save and preserve the shutout. Cramer came up with seven saves in the contest and coach Steve Robinson praised the play of sweeper Courtney Evans. Colfax had beaten Placer 2-0 late last month at the Woodland tournament. “They were much better and we knew they would be,” Robinson said. “I think we attacked a little more than they did, but they made it tough to create good chances.” Colfax will face Mesa Verde Monday while is at Bear River.
