Colfax High School’s snowboard team brought the heat to the slopes of Northstar on Monday, sweeping first place in the men’s, women’s and team competition. “Our team score is 491, which increases our lead,” Colfax coach Jack Morgan said. “We are 23 points ahead of Truckee.” Austin Leal sped in at a combined time of 2 minutes, 7.26 seconds to seal first place for the Colfax men. “He was trying to break two minutes,” Morgan said. “He was smoking and fun to watch.” Leal has placed first three races in a row and has seen great improvement this season. “It feels pretty good,” Leal said. “It was a little redemption from last year, when I won a race and it never happened again.” Leal has upped the intensity of his training. He now spends three days a week practicing with his Squaw Valley snowboard team and Saturdays practicing with Colfax. The Falcons had several other notable finishes. Evan Kaiser was third with a combined time of 2.11.1, edging Tahoe-Truckee’s Ryan Cowie. Isaac Merritt of Colfax finished seventh at 2.21.09. Pete Porata had the best finish for Placer – sixth with a combined time of 2:19.51. The Hillmen placed fifth as a team. Nelly Steinhoff of Colfax bounded down the mountain with a combined time of 2:16.49 to take first. Colfax’s Hannah West placed 12th at 2:36.51. For the Placer women, Emma Obray placed 13th with a time of 2:38.72, and Morgan Terry was 20th at 2:42.58. Morgan said there are a few things Colfax does to stay at peak performance. “We train on a course that is very similar to the course we race on and sharpened our boards like crazy,” Morgan said. ______________________________________________________ Northstar Giant Slalom Varsity Women’s Top 25 1.
