Colfax, Placer freshmen win big

Justin Kotey and Austin Mulderrig both rushed for over 100 yards and each scored a pair of touchdowns to help power the Colfax frosh football team past Union Mine, 41-6, Thursday night in Colfax. Kotey finished with 131 yards on nine carries and tallied touchdowns on runs of 83 and 30 yards while Mulderrig added 112 more yards on eight carries and had scoring jaunts of 47 and 41 yards. Colfax (1-2), which led at halftime, 20-0, began its scoring on the opening drive when quarterback Clay Southerland bootlegged in from 18-yards away. Mitchell Joiner capped the offense in the fourth quarter with a 47-yard touchdown run. Leading Colfax’s defensive play were strong efforts from Cory Schlittenhart, Alex Sinclear, Pat Reisinger, Casey Guy and Cory Wilhelm who had a fumble recovery. Placer 52 Casa Roble 0 at Orangevale — Casey Yunk threw a pair of touchdown passes and Michael Robinson rushed for 124 yards and tallied four touchdowns as the Hillmen frosh improved to 3-0 on the season. Placer dominated the Rams on both sides of the ball as the Hillmen led 38-0 at halftime and cruised home in the second half. Ryan Talley added 72 more rushing yards and scored a pair of touchdowns while Dominic Granieri was successful on six extra point kicks and also added a 37-yard field goal. On defense, Jake Lewis, Lee Milbourn-Weaver, Eddie Vandebos and Tony Suverkropp all had strong defensive games for the Hillmen who open Pioneer Valley League play next week against Mesa Verde. Del Oro 21 Franklin 20 at Loomis — The Golden Eagles stopped a two-point conversion try with two minutes left in the game to pull out the win over the Elk Grove opponent. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime before Del Oro pushed over the go-ahead score with five minutes to play. Del Oro (2-1) hosts Merced next Thursday. Woodcreek 22 Bear River 14 at Lake of the Pines — The Timberwolves pulled out the non-league win. Bear River (1-1) hosts Colfax next Thursday in its PVL opener.
