Come on and take a pre-ride

Group organizing day on Amgen course
-A +A
Interested in taking a stab at the Amgen’s course through Auburn? Saturday the Sierra Foothills Cycling Club is hosting a Celebrity Amgen Pre-ride through the first stage of the route. “We’ll experience the same challenging climbs, the same fast descents and the same scenic and winding roads,” said Larry Matz, president of the cycling club. “We’ll know exactly what the pros are going to face when they race this section the next day — but we’ll be able to relax and enjoy the beauty of spring time in the foothills.” Riders will join local celebrities including Mayor Bridget Powers, Channel 3 news reporters Deidre Fitzpatrick and Chris Riva and Channel 10 reporter Angel Cardenas for one of two rides on the course. There are two rides offered. One is more strenuous than the other. At 6:30 a.m. bicyclists will start in Auburn and ride round-trip to Nevada City. There is a 7,000-foot gain, according to information provided by the cycling club. Parking is available in a lot one block east of Lincoln Way on Magnolia. Take Cherry Street one block east, turn right on Magnolia and left into the lot. Please do not park on Lincoln Way. A rest stop in Nevada City will provide water and snacks. Take York Street one block north then left on Commercial. For those who don’t want to make the round-trip trek, meet at 9:30 a.m. in Nevada City for the 36-mile ride to Auburn. Cyclists can park cars at the U.S. Forestry Services Office, located on 631 Coyote Street in Nevada City. Plan to carpool to the start and for transportation back to Nevada City. Participants can enjoy a postride lunch at Monkey Cat Restaurant, located on 805 Lincoln Way in Auburn, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance. Purchase tickets at Victory Velo, Bicycle Emporium, or Bike Works, all in Auburn. For more information, visit sfcyclists.com. ~ Jenifer Gee
