Community hosts successful Project Canyon Safe clearing

-A +A
The Greater Auburn Area Fire Safe Council teamed up with volunteers and members of other local organizations to help promote a safer American River Canyon. According to Councilman Kevin Hanley, 118 people gathered Saturday morning at the Overlook off Pacific Avenue to continue the Project Canyon Safe Campaign, which began in May 2010 at Robie Point. Members of the council, Auburn Fire Department, California Conservation Corps, Recology Auburn Placer, Bushwackers, Brushbuster and community volunteers created a shaded fuel break in 4.21 acres of the canyon, with 119 chipped tons of fuel, Hanley said. Hanley said there were no injuries during the clearing. “It now looks like a park,” Hanley said Monday. “It felt good to support the trails for the Western States Run and the Tevis Cup. Quite a few runners safely ran through the work site.” ~Staff report
