Congratulations to 2011 grads

It has been great fun and inspiring to watch so many of you grow into becoming exceptional young adults! One teen’s determination to graduate with her class has been an incredible inspiration to me. I got to know Lyndsay Slocumb when she and my daughter skied in the Junior Olympics together when they were 12. They were on different ski teams and competed against each other, but at the JO’s they were competing as Far West teammates and shared a room together. Two years later I was riding up the chairlift at Boreal with Lyndsay, and I remember congratulating her on her first run where she was faster than Karly. She skis off to do some free-skiing and went off a jump going what was estimated to be 45 miles an hour and fell the distance of about 30 feet onto her back and neck. She was in a coma for five weeks, and one of her parents was by her side the entire time. For the past four years, Lyndsay has persevered to learn how to walk and talk again. She went to summer school every year and succeeded in graduating with her class at Reno High with a 3.8 grade point average. She plans to attend UN-Reno and hopes to eventually become a math teacher at Reno High. Incredible! Teresa Kenworthy, Auburn
