Corded phone a real lifesaver

The power being shut off Sunday as a safety precaution was understandable. Unfortunately, without power, telephone evacuation information got cut off, too. Then cell communication went out. Some didn’t know there was a mandatory evacuation order issued. Without evacuation instructions, people could have unknowingly fled into the fire zone, adding to an already catastrophic situation. Being on a hillside, I could see the direction of the fire’s movement along with the aerial assault. But those on the valley floor didn’t have that visual aid. By the time any of us would’ve smelled smoke, we would’ve been trapped without an escape route. Now we know we can’t rely on cell phones in an emergency, and a good, old-fashioned corded phone is a mainstay. My prayers are with those who suffered such tragic loss. Vicki Ogelvie, Christian Valley
