Del Oro High alumnus Eric Maginnis and Rescue native Brandon Cox both recently brought home state championships for the Sierra College men’s swimming and diving team.
Competing at the CCCAA State Championships at East Los Angeles College on May 1-3, Maginnis earned gold in the 100 butterfly and Cox finished first in the one-meter and three-meter dives, setting state records in the process.
“They’re both great guys who will likely be going on to the next level,” said Sierra College coach Chris Breitbart of the sophomore state champs. “A couple of universities were talking to them right off the bat. They work really hard and they’ve achieved some big goals.”
Maginnis, the Big 8 Conference Swimmer of the Year, won the 100 butterfly in 49.95 seconds.
Cox’s three-meter score of 369.55 crushed second-place Thomas Dillon of San Diego Mesa, who tallied 257.55 points. In the one-meter dive, Cox’s 317.55 final score was the top performance by 50 points.
Cox was named Men's Diver of the Meet for his state record victories. He also captured the overall Men's Performance of the Meet for smashing the three-meter state meet record by more than 100 points. Cox was previously named the NorCal Diver of the Year.
Sierra College’s Roland King was also honored as State Diving Coach of the Year at the state meet.
