The Del Oro High golf team held its own against the best in Northern California Monday, but came up three strokes short of a state championship berth. The Golden Eagles placed fourth at the CIF NorCal Championships at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. They shot 376 as a team. Granite Bay claimed the third and final qualifying spot, finishing at 373. Senior Austin Smotherman fired a 1-under-par 71 to claim an individual qualifying spot for the CIF State Championships at San Gabriel Country Club on June 6. He will be joined by Justin Raskin, who birdied the third playoff hole after shooting even-par 72 during regulation play. Louie Eure had a great day for Del Oro, finishing with a 75. Canyon Rowe and Bobby Mullen both shot 79 and Jahaan Nargussi added an 80 for the Eagles. Foothill of Palo Alto won the tournament with a 365.
