Everywhere Del Oro High School’s girls basketball players turned, there was a Woodcreek body or more all over them — arms and legs moving, trying to cut off passes, active.

But Brianna Ruiz and Stephanie Geyer finally began to find some openings in the second half, when they combined for 19 of the Golden Eagles’ 25 points in a 45-33 Sierra Foothill League victory Wednesday night at Woodcreek.

Ruiz and Geyer are junior captains with senior Paige McKim on a Del Oro (12-8 overall, 4-0 SFL) team that has won 63 consecutive league games. Ruiz was comfortable shooting from anywhere on the floor. She made two three-pointers and just beat the shot clock on a reverse layup on her way to 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Geyer scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Golden Eagles coach Mike Takayama said he knew it would be a hard-played game, one that saw each team clamp down on defense in the first half.

“In the second half, we took control and got some shots for Brianna and Stephanie, got some good looks for them,” Takayama said.

Del Oro shot just 36 percent from the floor (16 for 44), and Woodcreek coach Raymond Beck was happy with what he described as “excellent” defense by his Timberwolves (14-7, 2-2). But Woodcreek shot just 27 percent (14 for 52).

“We had a horrible shooting night,” he said. “We had a couple opportunities where we just didn’t finish. We held them to 45 points. They earned every single basket they made. I liked our game plan defending all their best people.”

Senior Kayla Gardner led the Timberwolves with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, mostly on smooth, high-arching attempts from the baseline. Senior Samantha Gonzalez scored seven of her nine points in the second half and had a game-best five assists. Senior Destiny Standifer came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
