Austin Smotherman waited eight years, but he finally got to see his name engraved in the trophy at the Sacramento City Junior Golf Championship. The Del Oro senior out-dueled longtime rival Cameron Champ on the MacKenzie Course at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento Thursday, tapping in a birdie on the 18th hole to win the title by two strokes. Smotherman finished 10-under-par in the 36-hole tournament, including a 6-under 66 in Thursday’s final round. “This was the last year I could play in it and I left my name here in Sacramento on the trophy,” Smotherman said. “That was my goal. I’ve won my age group here before, but never the overall championship.” Smotherman was one shot up as he played the final hole – a long par 5. He was just short of the green in two shots and chipped to within two feet to set up the tournament-clinching birdie. His brilliant final round included six birdies with no bogeys. Smotherman is in the midst of a whirlwind of golf tournaments. After playing in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and the Northern California Golf Association Junior Championship within the past week, Smotherman leaves for Mississippi on Saturday, where he’ll represent Northern California in the Big I Junior Classic.
