Del Oro High missed a prime opportunity to distance itself from Roseville in the Sierra Foothill League boys soccer standings Tuesday afternoon in Loomis.

The Tigers rallied for two second-half goals, including the game-winner on a free kick in the final five minutes to beat the Golden Eagles 2-1.

Del Oro’s Kolby Mitnick scored off a ball from Kellen Crow eight minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie, but Roseville used two stellar shots to steal the win.

The Eagles fell to 5-5-2 overall. Both teams are now 3-2-1 in the SFL.

“We could have been six points ahead of them with a win today,” Del Oro head coach Dave Shiro said. “Now it’s Rocklin, Roseville and Del Oro vying for the last two playoff spots. We really could have put Roseville in a bad spot by taking away a win from them.”

Only the top three teams in the league will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. The Eagles haven’t played in the postseason since 2006.
Del Oro kicks off the second round of SFL play Thursday at Granite Bay.

The Eagles close out the regular season at Roseville on Oct. 29, a game that may determine the league’s third playoff team.
