Elva Azzara is an amazing woman who turned 101 years old on June 28, 2009. She was born in 1908 and is living a wonderful life. She and her older sister, Vesta Chastain, were born in Sacramento to their parents, Mark and Arabella Raynsford. They lived in Oak Park when the original homes were built and Sacramento was first forming its downtown. Her father worked for the Post Office. Elva went to the University of the Pacific and then taught for 30 years at McClatchy High School, where she met her husband, Russell Azzara. Elva and Russell were married during the war and loved running Camp Sacramento for 10 years, from 1950 to 1960. Elva and Russell built their house on S. Land Park Drive and lived there until Russell passed away in 1997. Elva lived at Monroe Manor on Freeport Boulevard for over 10 years and after being a longtime visitor to Auburn, Elva moved here, where her sister had lived and niece and nephew, Celia Chastain-Olshefski and Mark H. Chastain, live currently. Elva moved to the Oakwood Village on Bell Road and currently spends time with her niece and nephew, six great-nieces and nephews and their children. She goes out to lunch weekly and enjoys music and games.
