The E.V. Cain Middle School cross country team earned top places in each division and finished third overall among 13 schools at the Foothill Intermediate Schools Athletic League cross country championships last Wednesday at William Jessup University in Rocklin. Sixth grader Lauren Mason won the 6th/7th grade girls race, while sixth grader Jack Kearns dueled several bigger competitors to take second in the 6th/7th grade boys event. Cross country newcomer Jose Rodriguez, a seventh grader, took sixth. Eighth grade co-captains Zach Stelzer and Micaylea Mitchell took second and fourth in their respective races. The Wildcats anticipated a muddy, swampy course. The meet went on despite Tuesday’s record-setting downpour and Wednesday’s morning rain, since the decomposed granite trails had drained well. The championships featured the top seven runners from each of the 13 schools.
