Ex-cop’s hearing tentatively scheduled

The former CHP officer charged with murder-for-hire could have a preliminary hearing Tuesday. Judge Alan Pineschi Friday scheduled Ruben Cesar Salgado, 37, for a tentative court day at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Dept. 44 in Roseville’s Bill Santucci Justice Center, according to Art Campos, spokesman for the Placer County District Attorney’s Office. The California Highway Patrol fired Salgado June 30. Salgado had been working for the department for 12 years, most recently at the Newcastle office. Salgado was originally arrested in May for numerous drug-related felonies and misdemeanors, and was out on bail when he allegedly attempted to hire someone to commit murder against a woman who sold him drugs. According to Campos, Salgado’s lawyer, Daniel Nicholson was not in attendance at the proceedings Friday. However, a stand-in lawyer indicated that the preliminary date might conflict with Nicholson’s request to hold the hearing later in the week. If this is the case, on Tuesday the hearing could be pushed back. Salgado is currently being held in Placer County Jail and is ineligible for bail. ~Bridget Jones
