It was business as usual Wednesday night for the Colfax Falcons boys basketball team in the opening round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. IV playoffs. Receiving 21 points and 10 rebounds from 6-9 center Ryan Salmonson and 18 more points from Justin Witt, the top-seeded Falcons built an early lead on visiting Ripon and steadily pulled away for an 81-53 win over the No. 16 seeded Indians from the Trans Valley League. Colfax, now 24-4 on the season, advances to Friday’s quarter-final round and will host Cosumnes Oaks of the Capital Valley Conference in a 7 p.m. game. Cosumnes Oaks, a first-year varsity team with all juniors and sophomores, defeated Linden, 53-49, in a first round game played on the Wolf Pack’s Elk Grove campus. Colfax led 21-10 after one quarter of play, stretched it to 38-23 by halftime and settled on a 58-40 margin at the end of three stanzas of action. The Falcons received more spark from Joey Jergo who added 14 points and nine rebounds, Chase Mosier who came off the bench to score 12 points and Austin Oberg who added six. Colfax’s defense, keyed by Kyle Greer and Mosier, did a fine job on Ripon scoring leader Matt Ratto who was held to just nine points, almost 10 under his season average. Ripon finished the season 13-15. In other Div. IV first round boys action, Modesto Christian routed Millennium, 100-50; Central Catholic topped Escalon, 59-49; Christian Brothers nipped Mariposa, 49-47; and Hilmar topped Highlands, 63-58, in overtime.
