It’s surprising what a few victories can do for a team in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section basketball Power Ratings. If you don’t believe it, just ask the Colfax Falcons’ and Del Oro Golden Eagles’ boys basketball teams.

In regards to the CIF Sac-Joaquin’s second basketball Power Ratings release Monday afternoon, the Falcons and Golden Eagles were the biggest benefactors of playing in leagues with superior league strength numbers.

For Colfax’s boys, wins over Foothill and Placer last week proved pivotal to the Falcons’ jumping from the No. 3 position in Div. IV in the first Power Ratings release on Jan. 29 to the No. 1 position this week.

Colfax, 19-5 overall, leapfrogged both Summerville and Riverbank – two teams that also didn’t lose last week - mainly on the impact of the Pioneer Valley League’s 6.9 league strength number, the highest in Div. IV.

Also in Div. IV, Bear River, meanwhile, split its two games last week but the Bruins right now are at No. 17 in the latest ratings. The Bruins, 14-7,  most likely need to win one of its final three games to cinch a playoff berth.

Del Oro, coming off big wins last week over Rocklin and Granite Bay, also received a boost from the Sierra Foothill League’s 8.0 league strength as the Golden Eagles went from 23rd a week ago in Div. II to the No. 11 position this week.

The Golden Eagles, 16-8 overall, could move into the top eight of  the Div. II rankings with a strong SFL finish. Del Oro hosts Roseville Wednesday, plays at Nevada Union Friday and then hosts Woodcreek next Tuesday.

Placer’s boys, 17-7 overall, slipped from 6th to 9th in the Div. III ratings. Lincoln, meanwhile at 19-5 and league leader of the PVL, is at No. 4 behind Sierra of Manteca, Casa Roble and Weston Ranch.

In boys Div. V this week, Forest Lake is No. 10 while Foresthill is at No. 22.

On the girls side, Bear River, 22-2, remained at the top spot in Div. IV with No. Argonaut (24-0) and No. 3 Colfax (16-9) just behind.

Del Oro’s girls are at No. 5 in Div. II while Placer’s girls, 21-4, are the No. 5 team in Div. III. In Div. V, Foresthill, 10-12, is No. 9 while Forest Lake Christian, 12-11, is No. 11.

Monday’s release of the power ratings will be the final posting until the CIF announces its playoff brackets in the afternoon on Wed. Feb 13
