Falcons edge Hillmen at Auburn CC

Colfax High senior Colby Smith shot an even-par 36 to lead all golfers at Auburn Country Club Wednesday and help the Falcons edge Placer in Pioneer Valley League action, 209-212. Derek Zachman shot a 42 for Colfax (2-0 PVL), followed by Danny Kraker's 43 and Austin Heikila and Jordan Hartman, who each shot 44 for the three-time defending PVL champions. Senior Matt Lunsford shot a 41 to pace the Hillmen (2-1 PVL), while Rob Schauble and Joseph Greenlee both shot 42. Max Munger (43) and Ryan Holden (44) rounded out Placer's top five. Colfax hosts Lincoln today at 3 p.m. at Auburn Country Club, while Placer plays Whitney at Lincoln Hills. TENNIS Highlands 5, Forest Lake 4 at Lake of the Pines ” Missing a few key players, the Forest Lake Christian tennis team came up just short Wednesday afternoon, falling to visiting Highlands 5-4. Knotted at 4-4, the Falcons dropped the mixed doubles match to fall to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the Golden Empire League. In his first-ever singles match, Colin Rafter won 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 2 singles. Rafter usually plays No. 1 boys doubles. FLC's No. 1 girls doubles team of Caitlin Hanson and Jen Menary and No. 2 Amanda Timmerman and Courtney both cruised in their matches, 10-1. At No. 1 boys doubles, a new team of Kyle Drury and Joe Voss won 10-7 for Forest Lake's fourth victory. The Falcons travel to play Capital Christian Friday at 3 p.m.
