Familiar Faces: Lois Granstrom — owner of The Chocolate Shoppe and Gift Emporium
By: Stephanie Breitbart Auburn Journal
Q. How long have you been the owner of The Chocolate Shoppe? A. We started in 1996, so we are going on 15 years. We started in the Gold Country Mall and then moved into this location. Q. Where did you grow up? A. I grew up in Wisconsin and moved out here for work in 1984. My husband and I moved to Auburn from Southern California. We chose this location to move to because we love this part of the state. I spent half my life sitting in traffic, so this is much nicer. Q. What are some of your hobbies? A. I love hiking, which is all around us here. I also like doing watercolor. I dabble in it and take classes in it. I read a lot, too. Q. What is something your customers might not know about you? A. I have a degree in biology and worked in microbiology. Then became a Realtor and worked in real estate before going into retail. Q. What kind of reading do you enjoy? A. I like everything. John Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. My favorite books are “East of Eden” and “Atlas Shrugged.” Q. What are your favorite movies or TV shows? A. I don’t watch a lot of TV or movies, but we rent DVDs. I watch the news, but the sitcoms they have now on TV are terrible. I like old movies like “Casablanca.” Q. What kind of music do you listen to? A. I like most kinds of music, but of course the rock ‘n’ roll I grew up with is the best. So many good ones back then, but you couldn’t get away from the Beatles. Q. Favorite place to go on vacation? A. Visiting my sister in Iowa is my favorite vacation. She lives right on the Mississippi so it’s really nice. Q. What is one of your greatest accomplishments? A. Having a small business in a small town like this is a great thing. It’s really nice to be part of the community. Q. What is a future goal? A. To enjoy life and make it through the economy so I have more time to do my hiking and painting. Q. What’s the best part about working in Auburn? A. The customers are the best part. Even though the economy is bad, I have so many regular customers that I’ve gotten to know. I really like that part.
