Fire scorches Auburn State Recreation Area grassland
By: Journal Staff Report
Initial report of smoke was from a resident off Gold Street in Auburn
AUBURN CA - A fire Sunday ignited about an acre of brush and grass in the Auburn State Recreation Area, adjacent to Auburn. The fire in the park area off Maidu Drive was initially reported at 6:40 p.m. It was contained 20 minutes later after burning about an acre of seasonal grass and some brush, Supervising State Park Ranger Scott Liske said. The initial report of smoke was from a resident off Gold Street in Auburn. Auburn Fire, Cal Fire and State Parks responded to the blaze, with no injuries to firefighters. Liske said Monday that the cause of the fire was still unknown. It occurred on land across from Placer County Water Agency's corporation yard on Maidu Drive. Liske said that a breeze was blowing toward Auburn but wasn't strong enough to affect the fire's spread. The cooler evening temperature and higher humidity also aided in extinguishing the fire, he said.
