Five sheriff’s employees under investigation for fraud

Five uniformed El Dorado County Sheriff’s employees are under investigation for possibly using online education from unaccredited sources to qualify for higher pay. Sgt. Jim Byers with the sheriff’s office confirmed in a Tuesday evening press release that an internal investigation revealed five employees have degrees that did not appear to meet accreditation according to Human Resources personnel. The internal investigation started after the educational credentials of former candidate for Sheriff Stan Perez were called into question during the recent election race for sheriff several months ago, Byers said. The sheriff’s office has referred the matter to the district attorney’s office and is conducting an internal investigation as to whether there was any fraudulent intent on the part of the involved employees. As this is a personnel matter, the names and ranks of the involved employees are not being released and further information will not be forthcoming pending the outcome of both investigations, Byers said Tuesday. ~ Staff report
