I see where the Hon. Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, is suggesting a return to the confiscatory property taxes we had prior to 1978 when Prop. 13 was passed, and is willing to stand behind Gov. (Jerry) Brown to implement it. The target, of course, is real and personal property that cannot be hidden or moved out of state or offshore. The confiscated funds will be used, then, to bolster the schools (which were to get funds from the California Lottery) and perpetuate the six-figure retirements of even minor public-sector players. This move, plus the demise of the Mortgage Interest Deduction suggested at the federal level, would put the final nail in the coffin of real estate ownership in this state. Isn’t real estate in enough trouble? Truett D. Neathery, Auburn
