Foothill Rallies Past Falcon Boys, 58-53
SACRAMENTO – A chance to pick up a big road win on opening night of the Pioneer Valley League basketball season slipped through the fingers of the Colfax Falcons’ boys team here Thursday night.
Playing host Foothill in a nip and tuck game the entire way, the Falcons paid dearly for a three-minute cold spell at the start of the fourth quarter and ended up dropping a 58-53 decision to the Mustangs.
Foothill, which entered Thursday’s game with only a 5-9 record and which had lost to Del Campo last week by 47 points, showed that they’ll still be a force to reckon with in league by outscoring the Falcons, 21-17 in the decisive fourth quarter.
Colfax, 14-4 overall on the season, led 14-10 after a quarter and 30-23 at halftime but the Mustangs worked their way back into the game and thanks to holding Colfax to just six third quarter points, took a 37-36 lead at the end of three.
From there, Foothill capitalized on a Colfax cold spell and extended their lead to 49-40 with just 3:36 to play.
Colfax’s Will Buell, who led all scorers with 28 points and also grabbed 14 rebounds, then caught fire with a pair of treys but the closest the Falcons could get was 56-51 before Foothill made a pair of late foul shots. All total, the Mustangs were nine of 10 from the charity stripe in the fourth stanza.
Matt Larson added 18 points for the Falcons who will play at Placer next Tuesday night.
