The Forest Lake Junior High Falcons boys basketball team got healthy just in time to defeat the Magnolia Rattlers 45-28 for the eighth grade large-school championship at Nevada Union High School’s Allied Gym on Saturday.

Forest Lake, which has just seven players and is considered a small school, was led by Andrew Borazzo (17 points), Josh McClain (9 points and 12 rebounds) and Alex Schneider (9 points) in the title game.

Under head coach Derek Gilliland and assistant Mark McClain, Forest Lake went 7-5 in the regular season. The team earned a No. 3 seed in the playoffs, after being riddled with injuries throughout the regular season.

Schneider had a cast taken off his arm the day the playoffs started, and the Falcons soared throughout the tournament.

“We started the tournament healthy for the fist time in eight weeks,” said coach McClain. “We had a five-point lead at the half (in the title match). A stingy full court press in the second half created multiple turnovers to create a quick 11-point lead and we never looked back.”
