Founding hospital doctor dies at 81

A founding medical leader in Auburn passed away Friday morning. Dr. Bruce Becker was one of 10 doctors who founded Auburn Faith Hospital. He practiced medicine in Auburn for 37 years before retiring, according to his step-daughter and Auburn resident Lynne Vaughn. “He loved his patients and the community itself,” Vaughn said Friday. Becker, 81, was active in the Auburn community. He was a 53-year member of the Rotary Club and was also a member of the Navy League. In 2006, he and two other surviving founding doctors, were honored for their contributions to healthcare at the State of the Community awards dinner. Vaughn said Becker was also an avid duck hunter, fly fisher and golfer. She said his family is hoping to schedule a memorial for next Saturday, put final plans are pending. Becker is survived by Vaughn and her brother, William Watson and two granddaughters Erin and Kerry Sweeney of Santa Rosa. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Sweeney and Vaughn’s mother, Doris Becker. He is also survived by his friend, Yvonne Ellis. ~ Jenifer Gee
