John Latham was smiling a little brighter as he filled up his gasoline tank in Auburn Monday morning. The Cool resident, who is always on the hunt for the lowest gas prices, has noticed a recent dip in prices at the pump. All but two Northern California metro areas have seen gas prices drop by 20 cents or more over the past month, according to AAA Northern California last week. “It’s a lot better. I saw a place in Sacramento had it for $3.31,” Latham said. “I go where the price is best and then fill up.” His Toyota Corolla gets over 30 miles per gallon in town, but Latham said he still likes to cut fuel costs as much as possible. He typically gets gas before driving into the American River Canyon back toward Cool. “I get the same gas mileage as the older Priuses and I’m always on the freeway, so that’s even better,” Latham said. “I always pay cash. The cash price is only $3.36 (per gallon) and then you don’t get in trouble with your cards.” Bob Moore, of Truckee, stopped in Auburn Monday to fill up his tank on the way back from a weekend road trip. He usually crosses state lines to save on fuel. “We live in Truckee. We buy gas in Reno,” Moore said. “We just came back from the Bay Area visiting my mother-in-law.” Moore said it’s worth the drive to save money on gas and even food prices outside of Truckee. He said he usually plans where he’ll stop for gas ahead of time if he is traveling by car. According to AAA Northern California, Monday, Auburn Gas and Shop, off of Lincoln Way, had the lowest prices on gas in town as of Dec. 15, at $3.43 per gallon of regular unleaded fuel. Gas and Shop’s cash only price is a few cents cheaper at $3.36. “We have a lot of customers give us a compliment and say ‘Thank you’ because our prices are lower,’” said Auburn Gas and Shop Cashier Harmi Mendoza. “You can use your debit card and it is the same price as cash.” Valero off of Lincoln Way came in second least expensive in Auburn at $3.50 per gallon. AAA Northern California reported the average gas price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.58 in Northern California and $3.27 nationally as of Dec. 13. The cheapest gas in the Northern California region can be found in Marysville, where the lowest price was just $3.29 per gallon as of Monday. “Global economic issues continue to play a huge role in where oil and gas prices are going,” said AAA Northern California Spokesperson Matt Skryja. “Investors have been a large driving force of where prices have been going as far as their buying behavior can influence the price of commodities up or down.” Reach Sara Seyydin at saras@goldcountrymedia.com. ______________________________________________________ Gas by the Numbers $3.43- The lowest reported price on gas in Auburn was found at Gas and Shop, off of Lincoln Way in Auburn $3.29- The lowest reported price on gas in Northern California can be found at Arco, off of North Beale Road in Marysville. $3.48- The latest reported average price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Sacramento. $ 3.54- The latest reported average price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in California. $ 3.22- The latest reported average price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States. 24 cents- The latest reported amount gasoline prices per gallon have dropped in Northern California since November.
