Golden Eagles’ freshman girls basketball undefeated
While the Del Oro High faithful have been caught up in the playoff race, the girls freshman basketball team has proved that the future is bright for the Golden Eagles.
The team wrapped up a perfect 25-0 record Thursday night at Nevada Union, which is its first undefeated season in school history.
“This was what I called my ‘stupid good’ team,” Del Oro freshman coach Steve Evans said. “Even when I was stupid, they were still good.”
The Eagles won several tournament championships early in the year, which included wins over St. Francis, Lincoln of Stockton and Kennedy.
Evans said the team’s biggest game of the year was a rematch with Oakridge. He said after beating Oakridge for the first time in years earlier in the season, Oakridge’s coach asked for a rematch. The second time around Del Oro came back to win by two points.
“It was at that point I thought we might just do this (go undefeated),” Evans said.
The Eagles averaged 52.3 points per game and held opponents to just 24.6 points per game.
Three of the freshman were invited to the varsity roster for playoffs but likely won’t see any playing time. Instead, it will serve as a reminder to Eagles’ fans what’s coming up in the future.
