GALT ” A sluggish first quarter made all the difference for the Del Oro High boys basketball team Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles fell to El Camino 56-49 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals despite a 20-point performance by senior Casey Arent. El Camino (24-5) outscored Del Oro 22-12 in the opening quarter, which proved to be the decisive stretch in the hard-fought game. We played well after the first quarter, Del Oro coach Geoff Broyles. Our kids' energy level was fantastic. They battled as hard as they could battle. I couldn't be more proud of how they competed and how composed they were. The Golden Eagles didn't even make the playoffs last year after losing in the second round in 2006 and 2005. They were more focused this year, Broyles said. They decided they wanted to go at least as far as Galt this year and they made it that far. Ryan Otten's layup off a steal with 1 minute, 3 seconds left cut the El Camino lead to 51-49, but a ball tipped out of bounds with 29 seconds left in a battle for a rebound was awarded to El Camino. Del Oro (21-9) had four fouls to give and burned more than half the remaining clock doing so, in an attempt to gain the ball back. I'm not going to say we lost. I'm going to stay we ran out of time, Broyles lamented. Jake Lovisolo scored 10 and Otten finished with eight points for Del Oro.
