Golden Eagles to play De La Salle in 2013
Del Oro High’s football motto of “Anyone, Anytime, Anyplace” will take on an extra special meaning in 2013.
Del Oro head football coach Casey Taylor unveiled his team’s 2013 schedule on Monday and if anyone thinks that any recent or past Golden Eagle slates were on the rugged side, the 2013 grid may top them all.
Highlighted by a first-ever date on Sept. 20 at defending CIF Open and National champion De La Salle, the Golden Eagles will play five non-league opponents that all qualified for the playoffs and posted a combined record of 53-12.
“No doubt it will be a challenging schedule but it’s what we have made a commitment here to do,” said Taylor. “We feel it is one of the top schedules around.”
Del Oro will open its season at home on Aug. 31 as part of the “Battle for the Veterans” showcase against James Logan of Union City. The Colts were 12-2 in 2012 losing only to Del Oro and De La Salle in the North Coast Div. I finals.
The Golden Eagles will then jaunt to San Diego County for the second leg of the “Battle for the Veterans” series and take on state power Oceanside. The Pirates were 12-1 in 2012 and defeated CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III champion Oakdale, 34-14.
Del Oro will then play De La Salle in Concord on Sept. 20. The Spartans, who hold the national win streak record of 151 straight games, have not lost to a northern California team since 1992. In 2012, the Spartans were both the No. 1 California and nationally ranked team.
The Golden Eagles will then host perennial Sacramento power Grant on Sept. 27 and St. Mary’s of Stockton, a 2012 Div. II playoff opponent, on Oct. 4.
The Golden Eagles will open Sierra Foothill League play on Oct. 11 at Woodcreek.
Included in the SFL slate is a Oct. 25 home date against Granite Bay, the defending state CIF Div. I champion.
