Measure A, Auburn?s ballot initiative to transform this city?s government from general law to home rule, boils down to one stark reality: if approved, it will invest a vastly powerful city council with infinitely more control over how this community is run.
In an era when politicians generally are viewed as virtually unaccountable, our council not only covets more power, it is marshaling the resources of the city and the Auburn Chamber of Commerce to achieve its goal ? carte blanche authority to govern.
The same ?club? of individuals who comprise the chamber board are appointed to important city commissions, who dominate civic clubs and business districts are driven to take complete control of the city through an unabashed ?government by clique.?
Like a high school prom committee, they have papered the city with banners and now proudly wear ?Yes on Measure A? polo shirts.
Two council members have ruled for 10 years; two others are in their third terms; none has any intention of relinquishing their ?office for life? status.
These same people are telling us not to trust the politicians in Sacramento, yet they expect us to trust them. Sorry, but I trust the status quo.
Vote no on ?A?.
