MODESTO (AP) — The grandmother of a Modesto toddler who was shot in what family members claimed was a drive-by shooting has been arrested.
Modesto police say 54-year-old Maria Elena Hernandez was booked on suspicion of child endangerment late Sunday, hours after she brought her granddaughter to a hospital with a gunshot wound to her upper body.
The Modesto Bee reports family members told police that the 18-month-old girl was in the front yard when she was hit by gunfire Sunday afternoon.
But neighbors didn't hear any gunshots and detectives found no evidence of a drive-by shooting.
Modesto police Lt. Rick Armendariz told the newspaper that the family has been uncooperative and that police are still trying to determine where the shooting actually took place.
The girl is listed in critical condition at an Oakland hospital, but police say she is expected to survive.
