A gravel-truck trailer overturned Monday morning on Highway 49 just east of the Lincoln Way intersection in Auburn. Vehicle traffic along the winding stretch of road between Auburn and the American River confluence was closed while the truck trailer was being righted and gravel was scooped up. No injuries were reported in the single vehicle mishap, which took place at about 10 a.m. Traffic was flowing normally again both ways later in the morning. Auburn Police Officer Brent Froberg said the driver reported the trailer inexplicably tipped over as he was proceeding uphill toward Auburn. Cause of the accident, which took place on one of the many turns, had not been determined, Froberg said at the scene Monday. The driver was identified by police as Robert Barger, 50, of Pilot Hill. He was found at fault for traveling at an unsafe speed but not ticketed. Barger said he had driven the route numerous times and this time, felt a tug, just before the trailer went over on its side, hitting the bank and spilling its load. Traffic was temporarily rerouted at Auburn to the Foresthill exit, where drivers could take Foresthill Road to Old Foresthill Road back onto Highway 49 toward Cool. – Gus Thomson
