Sophomore Tyler Gums and the Hillmen found their way into the win column.

Gums struck out five batters in four innings of work, earned his first varsity win and had a two-RBI hit in the Hillmen’s 11-4 victory at River City Tuesday.

Eight Hillmen had hits, as Placer (1-2) won its first game of the year.

Riley Beames had a two-RBI double and Kodiak Gregersen also drove in two runs for Placer, which put two runs on the board in the first inning, sixth in the fourth and another three in the seventh.

“We did a good job base running and moving runners over so when guys got hits we brought them in,” coach John Hilton said. “Our pitchers did a good job too. We still had errors (four), but we did a much better job in all faucets of the game. Defensively, we just need to reduce the errors.”

Austin LeBleu had a triple and Chip Mitchell had a double for the Hillmen. Placer also got hits from Casey Yunk, Josh Hattrup and Collin Correnti.

Gums gave up one run. He was relieved by Troy Taylor, who struck out four in the final three innings.

Placer will play at Casa Roble Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. Isaac Brahce could get the starting call, but Hilton said it will be a game-time decision.
