Despite tough competition, an Auburn girl was able to capture silver on the bars at a level five meet.
Finn Thomas, a 12-year-old who competes for Auburn Gymnastics Center, won second place on the bars at the 2012 NorCal Level 5 States in Rancho Cordova over the weekend.
The Auburn gymnast scored a 9.175, wowing the judges with a superbly executed and powerful performance.
Thomas was one of two to qualify from Auburn Gymnastics Center’s level 5 team. Thomas, Midori Ogino and more than 600 other competitors from Northern California competed against the best gymnasts in each of the girls’ age groups. Thomas competed in the 12a division and Ogino competed in 11d.
“These girls are among the best in the state and went head to head holding their heads up high and representing our gym well,” coach Jennifer Christenson said.
Thomas and Ogino together received three medals for finishing in the top of their respective age divisions. Ogino’s top medal was on the beam where she placed fifth.
Level 4 State Championships take place on Nov. 17 and 18 in Oroville. Auburn is taking a team of eight qualifiers.
“Our expectations are high for quite a few of the girls on the team,” Christenson said. “This is going to be a landmark meet for us.”
Auburn Gymnastics Center is offering a Thanksgiving gymnastics camp for beginners aged 3 to 8 for three days before Thanksgiving from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily as well as holiday shopping days.
