Help returning war veterans

First of all I want to extend my sympathy and condolences to the family of Trevor Hogue. Second I would like to thank the Auburn Journal for running this story (June 15) and bringing to light the problems suffered by returning veterans. I myself was a returning combat veteran from the Vietnam era. More than twice the number of Vietnam veterans who died in Vietnam have committed suicide. The rate of suicides from military personnel coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan is alarming. These veterans need our help. If you know a veteran please take time out and talk to them. Let them know you are there for them and that there is help available for them. As Mr. Cody Conway stated in the article, “They’re supposed to have transition assistance.” There is none. You have to find it yourself but it is out there, through the VA, VFW, American Legion. There is also a local county VA representative located on Bell Road and the Sacramento vet center on Howe Avenue. Please give these veterans all the help you can. Don’t let another precious life slip between our fingers. Semper Fi. Joe DePaoli, Meadow Vista
