Hillgals brace for Bear River
The Placer High softball team got payback for one Pioneer Valley League loss on Monday. The Hillgals will look to avenge their other setback today.
Placer edged Center 3-2 Monday as Abby Kendall and Brooke Stufflebean came up with two-out RBI-singles to give the Hillgals the lead.
Kaelin Amrein pitched seven strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing one earned run. She also had a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score Haley Tupen, who had two hits in the game.
Placer (5-2 PVL) pulled into second place in the league standings. The Hillgals will visit league-leading Bear River (7-0) today at 4 p.m.
Del Oro 3, Granite Bay 1 at Del Oro — Jordan Courage pitched a complete-game, one-hitter Tuesday and got enough offense from the rest of the Golden Eagles to put the Grizzlies away.
Courage had four strikeouts and one walk as Del Oro jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind RBI hits from Whitney Smith, Hannah George and Paige McKim.
The Eagles moved to 12-1 in the Sierra Foothill League and 17-3-2 overall. They host Roseville at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Placer 3, El Camino 0 — The Hillmen celebrated senior night with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 win over the Eagles as senior Erin Ellner stepped in to coach the team as part of her senior project.
Ellner, a standout on the Placer girls team, helped the Hillmen improve to 5-8 in the Capital League heading into Thursday’s season finale at Bear River.
Senior Sam Bennett led Placer in the win Tuesday, collecting 10 blocks, eight kills and 20 assists. Senior Josh Fitts had a big night with 12 blocks, six kills and three assists.
Del Oro 8, Weston Ranch 1 at Loomis — Fresh off their Sierra Foothill League title, the Golden Eagles cruised to a win in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
Brett Bacharach, Gabriel Ezcurra, Stenner Craig, Paul Villa, Max Hennessey and Daniel Silva posted singles victories for del Oro.
In doubles play, Cyrus Mann and Mitch Pingree took the No. 1 doubles match. Kyle Borges and Taylor Butterfield won at No. 2. Alex Sznaider and Alexis Ezcurra were the No. 3 winners.
Del Oro will host a second-round match on Monday at 3 p.m.
Placer 9, Cosumnes Oaks 0 — The Hillmen coasted through the first round of the Division III playoffs with just one match going to a third set.
Tawny Thompson and Romy Behunova rallied for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 win at No. 2 girls doubles. Claire McInerney and Kirstin Schauble had a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1. In boys doubles, Andrew Carducci and Andrew Dahlin had a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Derek Ikeda and Logan Thompson were 6-0, 6-2 winners at No. 2.
Steven Fraguglia, Blair Meyer, Tine Hummel and Lindsey Holden cruised to singles wins for Placer, which will host a second-round match on Monday at 3 p.m.
Colfax 5, Riverbank 4 at Riverbank – The No. 2-seeded Colfax coed tennis team kicked off the postseason with big wins from their top players in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III tennis tournament.
Justine Hanson, the No. 1 singles player, won her match 7-6, 6-1 and No. 2 singles player Aspen Fairchild won in two sets, 7-6 and 6-4.
The No. 1 doubles team of John Bianchi and Eric Graves dominated in a 6-3, 6-2 win as did the No. 2 doubles team of Connor Haens and Chris Harshmen, who won 6-0 and 6-1.
The No. 2 girls team EV Sweet and McClaren Unholz won 6-1 and 6-0.
The Falcons play at West Campus at 3:30 p.m. today.
Placer 1, Foothill 1 — The Hillgals settled for a tie in their season finale.
Senior Ashley Noder closed out her career with Placer’s lone goal as Sabrina Viscuso assisted on the play.
The Hillgals finished fourth in the Pioneer Valley?League with a 3-5-2 record. They were 8-9-2 overall.
On Monday, Placer scored 10 minutes into the second half off a corner kick from Caitlin Letcher that was followed up by Ashley Noder in a 1-0 win over Golden Sierra.
Forest Lake 5, Sacramento Waldorf 0 at Lake of the Pines — The Falcons flew to 9-1 in the Central Valley California League with goals from five different players.
Cassidy Green, Morghan Koch, Aly English, Kynsi Vanderwesthuizen and Erica Grizoffy scored for Forest Lake while Lia Hagerty, Sarah Ponce, Green, Koch and English dished out assists.
The Falcons will face Delta today on the road.
Del Oro wins SFL Tournament No. 2
The Golden Eagles fired a 382 as a team to win the Sierra Foothill League tourney, but Granite Bay finished second to clinch the league championship.
Senior Austin Smotherman fired a 3-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors for Del Oro. Justin Raskin carded a 75, Canyon Rowe and Jahann Nargussi both finished at 79. Louie Euer added an 80 and Bobby Mullen had an 85.
Del Oro will compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament next Tuesday at Rancho Murieta.
