Hillgals rally to edge Bruins, 1-0
By: Journal Sports Staff
Rachel Myers didn't know the Bear River High girls soccer team would present such a stiff challenge Tuesday afternoon. The Placer senior did know time was running out, so she went to work. Myers streaked down the right sideline, cut to the middle and fired a shot that ricocheted off the Bear River goalkeeper and onto the foot of Rosie Havener. Havener knocked in the only goal of the game with one minute remaining as the Hillgals fought past the Bruins 1-0 at Railhead Park to open Pioneer Valley League play. Bear River kind of took us by surprise because they're a lot better this year, Myers said. But we weren't ready to tie them yet. A scoreless tie looked inevitable until Havener's heroics, even though Placer controlled the run of play for most of the game. The Hillgals outshot the Bruins 22-6 for the game, but failed to create many good scoring chances. Celeste Havener, Rosie's freshman sister, nearly put Placer on top late in the first half, but her shot on a breakaway sailed wide right. Bear River's few scoring chances were turned away by Placer's freshman goalkeeper, Tori Jordan. Jordan has performed well in place of senior Jenna Davis, who will be out at least two more weeks with a fractured rib. The Hillgals got excellent defensive work from Brooke Bendorf, A.J. Furlong, Kelly Viray and Kayla Lipsmeyer. Myers and junior Theresa Meyer played well in the midfield, while senior Madison Meade provided some strong play off the bench. Colfax 6, Mesa Verde 1 at Colfax ” Junior Josie Ruzette scored a hat trick and the Harrison twins shined on their 18th birthday as the Falcons cruised in their PVL opener. Courtney Harrison scored a goal and Samantha Harrison added an assist as Colfax improved to 6-3-2 overall. Adrienne Van Auker and Kelli Johnston also had goals while Ashley Broussard anchored the Falcons' tough defense. Forest Lake 6, Woodland Christian 0 at Woodland ” Senior Annie Ormiston kicked in a pair of goals and tossed in an assist as the Falcons coasted to 2-0 in the Central Valley Christian League. Jessica Raskin, Jordan England, Logan Burke and Kacie McGeary added one goal each for Forest Lake (2-6-1 overall). Christa Weissman had an assist.
