Hillgals seize top three spots

Kenworthy, Meyer, Rothe lead the way at Sugar Bowl

Karly Kenworthy, Haley Meyer and Paige Rothe swept the top three spots and the Placer High girls ski team cruised to another dominant win Monday in the third and final giant slalom race at Sugar Bowl. Kenworthy finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 5.19 seconds for two runs. Meyer (2:09.26) and Rothe (2:09.81) were close behind. “It was an awesome course,” said Placer head coach Matt Conley. “Sugar Bowl set up a great, long course to get us ready for state.” Colfax’s Nicole Bajka placed fifth, followed by Lanae Rothe of the Hillgals sixth and Allison Gutierrez seventh overall. Kaitlyn Dwelle paced Bear River, finishing 17th. Colfax’s Bailey Simmons was 25th. Defending state champion Max Schopfer of the Falcons won the boys race in 2:05.15. Teammate Dylan Laidlaw raced to fourth place (2:09.77). Placer’s Julian Faulkner was sixth (2:10.26), followed by teammates Travis Tidd (13th) and Kyle Wells (26th). Tommy Irons finished 28th for Colfax, while Scott Dwelle (33rd) led the Bruins. Teams will have one more slalom race next Monday to qualify racers and improve positions for next month’s state championships, which will be held at Mt. Shasta.
