Hillmen bury Bruins, Del Oro goes down

The Bear River High wrestling team put up a fight Wednesday night, but the Bruins could not handle the Placer big men in a Pioneer Valley League battle at Earl Crabbe Gym. Bear River won two of the first three matches and had the lead after Nick Sauers’ victory at 130 pounds. But Placer reeled off nine victories in a row, including seven pins, to run away with the victory. The Hillmen have not lost a league match in the last three seasons. Ryan Keller had Placer’s first win at 112 while Andrew Naleway had a pin at 125. Zach Uvalle added a win by decision at135 before the Hillmen racked up six pins in a row. Joe Thornton (140), Brendan Packheiser (145), Scott Dietz (152), Michael Robinson (160), Steven Cox (171), Noah Stedman (189) and Jon Medina (heavyweight) all added pins for Placer. Jake Lewis won a decision at 215. In junior varsity action, Placer beat Baer River 57-21 behind wins from Kelsey Johnson, Jacob Hopkins, Tony Suverkropp, Zach Steagall and Cameron Scott. Del Oro34, Roseville 34 at Loomis — The Golden Eagles’ Sierra Foothill League win streak came to an end as the Tigers won by the slimmest of margins. The score ended in a tie, but Roseville was awarded the victory by virtue of having won more individual matches. The Golden Eagles dominated from 145 pounds and up, but Roseville won the first seven matches of the night and got another at 189 to force the tie. Junior Austin Branum (145) and seniors Foster Fretland (160) and Tyler Uhler (171) picked up pins for the Eagles. Kevin Burrage won a major decision at 152 while Tanner Woods (215) and Dustin Mollard (heavyweight) won via forfeits.
