ROSEMONT — The Placer and Del Oro High wrestling teams ran into section juggernauts Saturday. Both settled for runner-up finishes at the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Championships at Rosemont High. The Hillmen fell to Oakdale 59-16 in the Division IV final while Del Oro gave Ponderosa a serious scare before falling 32-22. The Golden Eagles took second place at the team championships for a staggering 10th time. “All of the coaches are really proud of the guys,” Del Oro coach Dave Sanchez. “We wrestled really well in the final. We didn’t leave any points on the mat.” Placer took second at the team championships for a second straight season as the Mustangs’ experience and depth were too much. “Oakdale’s just a high caliber team,” Placer coach Jess Stiff said. “But overall we had a great day. We beat Ceres pretty handily. They had some talented kids, but our depth was the difference.” Stiff complimented the efforts of junior Joe Thornton, who had a pair of wins against quality opponents on Saturday. Del Oro was led by seniors Jesse Stafford and Dylan Blomgren. Stafford had a pin in the loss to Ponderosa while Blomgren won a close decision at 140 pounds. He helped the Golden Eagles build an early lead that the Bruins did not overcome until late in the match. Kevin Burrage won a major decision at 160, Shane Plummer had a big win at heavyweight and Johnny Zeiour won 19-14 at 103. Brendan Montoya had a win at 112, but Ponderosa won five of the last six matches to clinch the win. Del Oro beat Oak Ridge 40-26 in the semifinals Saturday. Both teams will begin gearing up for the individual postseason. Placer will compete in the Pioneer Valley League Championships on Thursday at Whitney. Del Oro is headed to the Sierra Foothill League Championships at Nevada Union Thursday.
