ANTELOPE – There were some tense moments for the Placer High football team Friday night at Center. But by early in the fourth quarter, the Hillmen were marching up and down the field and there were smiles all around on the Placer sideline.
The Hillmen fought off a scrappy Center team for a 49-28 win to recover from a loss to Colfax last week.
Senior Brad Spangler rushed for 130 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns. He also took a kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Joe Mangino and Michael Robinson added two touchdowns each as the Hillmen improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pioneer Valley League.
Placer was unable to impose its will on the home team until late in the game. Center got a fourth-down stop early in the third quarter, then drove 49 yards for a touchdown to pull within six points of the Hillmen at 20-14.
Placer took control with three straight touchdowns to gain some breathing room. Center (4-5 overall, 2-2 PVL) didn’t quit as D’Juan Bellaire and Tyrel Anderson had fourth-quarter TDs, but the Cougars fell to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the PVL.
Placer’s defense was strong all night. Senior Colton Davenport had two sacks and two more tackles for loss. Junior Eddie Vanderdoes had three tackles for loss and two sacks while Johnny Foley, Tanner Jay, Tony Suverkropp and Tyler Graves also had big games.
