Hillmen run away with section title

Placer wins third section banner in three years

The Placer High boys cross country team won its second Sac-Joaquin Section championship in three years Friday at Willow Hills in Folsom. Senior Christian Finkbeiner raced to third place individually as the Hillmen edged out second-place El Dorado to win with 92 points to the Cougars’ 95. Finkbeiner finished the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 18 seconds. Junior Gama Gomez ran to 22nd place, clocking in at 17:14. Junior Viktor Dorofeyev was close behind in 24th in 17:19 and sophomore Felix Oliveros raced to 28th in 17:23. Freshman Jose Rodriguez came up with a 34th-place showing in 17:43 to help Placer’s cause. Del Oro junior Trevor Stephens ran to second place in 16:14 to lead the Golden Eagles to third place. Senior Sam Baker clocked in at 17:00 to place 13th for Del Oro, which will join Placer at the CIF State Championships Nov. 26 in Clovis. The Del Oro High girls took second place to advance to the state meet. Junior Megan Gentes raced to seventh place while Alex Lua was 12th and Maddy Montgomery was 15th. The Placer High girls placed sixth, led by senior Christina Winters, who placed 16th individually. In Division IV the Bear River girls placed fourth, led by junior Janelle Jensen’s 13th place finish in 20:53. Bear River junior Alex Coffman placed sixth in the Division IV race in 17:10.
