Hillmen suffocate Rams in the second half
By: Journal Sports Staff
Both teams had major players on the sidelines in street clothes Tuesday night, an indication that football season is going well. Placer’s basketball season got off to a great start against Casa Roble, thanks to a superb second-half effort. The Hillmen held the Rams to just 12 second-half points and used an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter to pull away for a 53-43 victory at Earl Crabbe Gym. Senior Jeff Patton scored six of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to pace Placer, which was without football players Josh Klem and Matt Ross. The Hillmen football team will play in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV semifinals at Dixon Friday. Conrad Harder added 10 points and point guard Michael Jensen had a great floor game to go with 12 points. Things didn’t look good for Placer in the second quarter as Casa Roble built a 31-22 lead. But the Hillmen chipped away. Harder had a 3-pointer and then a pair of free throws to put Placer ahead 36-35 late in the third. Jensen broke a 36-36- tie with a bucket to start the fourth and Placer never looked back. In junior varsity play, Placer edged Casa Roble 40-39 as Koal Swisley poured in 18 points to lead the charge.
