Hinch vaults to state title

-A +A
Derek Hinch picked the perfect time to unleash his best performance of the year. The Placer High graduate soared 16 feet, 8.25 inches to win the California Community College Athletic Association title on May 23 at American River College. Hinch, who graduated from Placer in 2009, is a freshman at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. He became the fourth pole vaulter from Cuesta to win a state championship and the first since 2006. His winning vault was six inches better than Mt. Sac’s Michael Simms, who placed second. Hinch will take aim at Cuesta’s school record of 17-3 next season as a sophomore . — Todd Mordhorst
