The Sierra College men’s golf team finished fourth in the 2009 Cal State Community College Championship hosted at Roseville’s Sierra View Country Club Monday. After falling behind during the front half of the 36-hole event, it was an uphill battle against Ventura, Palomar and the first place finishers from Fresno City College. Sierra finished 36 holes at 733 (372-361). While Fresno City ran away with the team competition, the race for second place came down to a five-stroke difference between four teams. Fresno City scored eight-under-par as a team with a 712 (358-354). Sierra’s Kevin Lucas finished sixth of the top individuals shooting a 69 on a par 72 in the back 18. Lucas hit 33 out of 36 greens but struggled putting. The difference between sixth place individually and first place was one stroke. His second round score earned him the sixth place spot and a position on the all-state team. Lucas leaves Sierra after this year, as the Wolverines will return just three players for next season. “We made history,” said Lucas. “We’ve set records and that alone makes the season successful. We reached most of our goals this season, but I think we’re definitely capable of scoring a lot lower.” Sierra won their third straight NorCal Championship prior to the state competition. In the Big 8 Conference Sierra beat Fresno City College by 23 strokes only to fall 21 strokes behind them at state. Lucas’ total score of 141 was matched by teammate Stefan Edman. In the first round Edman shot 71, the best morning score for his team. Of the top 10 individual results Edman was right in the pack, but with the second 18 used as a tiebreaker, his overall place left out of the all-state group. “Today I putted well,” said Edman. “I just had some mistakes. In my last 18 holes I had five bogies and seven birdies. Five bogies is not respectable out here.” Coach Tim Hovancsek acknowledges his team’s success in finishing fourth as opposed to last year’s seventh-place finish in state. Though he regrets to lose most of his players, he will now look to bring in close to 10 new golfers to build on the team’s successes. “Overall I was pleased with our season,” Hovancsek said. “The guys worked hard all year and I moved three valuable sophomores on and we have three freshmen coming back. We’re just going to keep building like we’ve been doing.” All-state team: (top six scores with second 18 used as a tiebreaker) 1. Kendall Jenkins (Riverside Community) - 73/67 for a 140. 2. Scott Sexton (Cypress) - 71/69 for a 140. 3. Tom Richardson (Fresno City) - 71/69 for a 140. 4. Alton Anderson (Ventura) - 68/72 for a 140. 5. Ryan Weltig (Canyons) - 73/68 for a 141. 6. Kevin Lucas (Sierra) - 72/69 for a 141.
