Arbaugh completes Navy basic training in Illinois Navy Seaman Apprentice Kevin M. Arbaugh, son of Cheryl M. and Joel D. Arbaugh of Colfax, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Arbaugh completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit. Arbaugh is a 2009 graduate of Colfax High School. Barker awarded medal for work on USS?Helena Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher R. Barker, a 2002 graduate of Golden Sierra High School, Garden Valley, was recently awarded a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his achievement while serving as a member of a machinery division aboard the USS Helena, homeported in Norfolk, Va. As the ship’s damage control petty officer, Barker was critical in repopulating the ship’s damage-control gear. He also performed flawlessly an emergency replacement of upper main journal bearings in a record two days and the replacement of the fuel rack trip lever mechanism followed by the replacement of eight cylinder liner adapters. In addition, Barker ensured damage gear was installed and fully operational. Barker joined the Navy in August 2007.
