The ride came to an end for the Placer High girls basketball team.
The Lady Hillmen were handed a 62-47 season-ending defeat Wednesday night in a CIF Northern California Div. III Regional game at Campolindo.
Lauren Collins had 13 points and Kerry McCullough added 10 for Placer (25-6), which trailed 35-18 at halftime against the Cougars (24-5) of Moraga.
Ari Jensen and Elena Daniel added eight points apiece, Kellyn McDonald had six and Raquel Quirarte five, but it wasn’t enough for Placer to keep its season alive.
“It was an incredible season with incredible kids,” said coach Tony Camillucci, whose team grabbed a share of the Pioneer Valley League title in the regular season. “I’m going to miss these seniors. Hopefully they’ve set a standard that the younger kids will strive to continue to achieve. I’d like to thank the seniors for that.”
Seniors Olivia Holmes, Kirstin Schauble and Jenelle Pickard weren’t able to play Wednesday because of injuries and sickness, but they still made the 220-mile round-trip trek to cheer on their teammates.
“I was bummed for them but they were there cheering on the team,” Camillucci said. “It was kind of a bummer they couldn’t play (in their last games as seniors). But it showed great character that they were there.”
Camillucci said the loss wasn’t easy for the team, but it certainly wasn’t the end of the world.
“They’re competitors, at some level they’re disappointed,” the coach said. “But they’re happy and proud of what they did this season. It wasn’t as devastating as a loss as it could have been.
“… They played hard and fought to the very end. We ended the last couple of minutes with all seniors on the court. I was real proud of all the seniors.”
