It's off to state championships for Colfax High ski, snowboard teamsBy: Mike Ray, Colfax Record Sports Editor
For two years running, the California-Nevada Interscholastic Ski Federation’s girls varsity state championship banner has resided at Colfax High School.
Last season, the Lady Falcons placed three of their top four skiers in the top 10 in both slalom and giant slalom races as the Falcons scored 695 points in the two-day competition held at Northstar.
Now, the question arises: Can the Lady Falcons do it again?
“It’s going to be tough but we could be right in there,” said Colfax coach Jeff Scott. “We’re looking at Davis, Mt. Shasta and Mammoth to also be very good this year.”
This year’s CNISF state championships are set next week at Mt. Shasta, with snowboard competition being held Monday and Tuesday followed by snowboarding on Wednesday and Thursday.
Colfax’s girls skiers will be resting their hopes with sophomore Teagan Santin, who was last year’s overall state women’s champion, Stephanie Scott, Bailey Semmens and Elise Douglas.
On the boys side, Tom Irons, Scott Irons, Spencer Guito and Jens Boblit will carry the Falcons’ hopes.
Colfax’s snowboard teams also have high hopes. For the girls, defending individual champion Nelly Steinhoff leads the way.
Steinhoff will be joined by Brittany Thomas, Jessica Mora and Alora Bourne on the girls side, while the boys will be represented by Tanner Kane, Kyle Bryant and Cameron Barbarick.
